Earlier this week, I spent my grocery money on getting my car fixed. And wouldn’t you know, three days later, it’s making the same noise again that it was making before I took it in. So it looks like I’m back to square one. Not to mention the fact that I’m driving on bald tires. Or that the Service Stabilitrak light that has been an on-and-off issue since I bought my Chevy Equinox used three years ago is on again (I’ve taken it in to two different dealerships, plus a private shop, and no one can figure out why the light keeps coming on.)

Wal-Mart Savings Catcher
This one wasn’t on the list, but I think it’s worth sharing. I’ve been using this app on my cell phone since August, and I have redeemed a total of $52.63 on this app since then. I love it! It is so easy to use, and I have gotten some really big savings on their price-matching without ever having to look at a single flyer. On one trip, I got almost $7.00 back on a bag of cat food!
To use this app, all you have to do is download it to your cell phone, register for an account, and then get in the habit of scanning your receipts after checkout. There is no more digging through sales flyers and bringing them in to ask for a price match. The Savings Catcher does all the work for you! This app also saves your receipts for you, so you no longer have to worry about losing receipts for items that you might need to return later.

IBotta
The cool thing about the IBotta app is that you can get rebates on milk, bread, eggs, and cereal of any brand. You just download the app to your phone, unlock the rebates you want, and scan your grocery receipt. The annoying thing about this app is, unlike the Wal-Mart Savings Catcher, you have to unlock the coupons to use them. This means watching a 10-second advertisement on your cell phone for each rebate that you want to unlock. Because of this extra step, I probably won’t bother with it for anything other than those basics I mentioned above. |
Additionally, I don’t want to find myself in the store wasting money on items I never would have purchased if I didn’t have a coupon for them. Remember, coupons are only a good deal when they are for items you already need.

Checkout 51
I just downloaded the Checkout 51 app this morning, and it doesn’t look like there is any unlocking to do with this app. According to their website, you can just scan your receipts and get rebates for that week’s specials. Like IBotta, they also offer rebates on milk, bread, eggs, and cereal of any brand. I will have to try this one out and get back to you. Download Checkout 51 now. |
It looks to me like you can scan your receipts through all three of these apps and potentially get cash back from three separate places for the same item. I would recommend trying out all three just to see how it goes. I’m a little lazy, so I’ll probably eventually get bored with unlocking savings from IBotta, but I plan to get in the habit of always scanning my receipts through Checkout 51 like I do with my Savings Catcher. So far, I think the Wal-Mart app is the best one, hands down, when it comes to ease of use and availability of offers in your local area.
If you’ve tried these apps or know of any similar ones that I could try out, please drop me a line in the comments below. In the meantime, I’m going to be working my way through these other money-making ideas on my list, and I will get back to you on the ones that I think are worth trying out.
