There is a plethora of ways to make money surfing the worldwide webs. These are a few that I use. I have found that these are a good way to kill time when stuck in the doctor’s waiting room or when waiting for a kid’s baseball practice to end. While these won’t generate enough money to take the place of a real job, they do bring in enough extra spending cash to make it worth the time.

A co-worker recently brought me a card for Administrative Assistant’s Day, along with a $20 gift card for Hy-Vee. I’m not an administrative assistant, but I wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. So I took my gift card and headed off to find the nearest Hy-Vee.
I’d never shopped at a Hy-Vee store before, and let me just say… that place makes me feel POOR! They have tons of great stuff in there that I’ll probably never be able to afford. But I did find a great 5 for $20 meat deal that the cashier told me they run all the time. This might turn out to be a blessing, as I’m often disgusted by the high price and low quality of the meat selection at Aldi’s where I get most of my groceries and the Wal-Mart where I grab the few things I can’t find at Aldi’s.
This afternoon, I was craving lemon meringue pie, only without the meringue (because, yuck). I pulled out my trusty old Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook that I picked up at a rummage sale about sixteen years ago (the cookbook outlasted my then-new marriage) and looked for a recipe.
I’ve never made lemon meringue pie, so I wasn’t sure I’d have everything I needed. In fact, I doubted I would. But I can usually come up with a good substitution for most missing ingredients most of the time, so there was no harm in trying.
This morning, my sister and I had a rummage sale out in front of my apartment building. I was hoping to earn enough money to buy my son a bike for his birthday. He’s about to turn nine and still can’t ride one. I made $2.25. My sister made almost four whole dollars. My son made $1.75 selling lemonade. I’m still not sure what he’s going to get for his birthday. This is going to be one of those weeks where I’m getting my car fixed instead of buying groceries, so I’ll be getting creative trying to squeeze our meals out of what’s left in the kitchen from last weekend’s shopping. It sucks, but what can you do? If I don’t get my car fixed, I won’t be able to get myself back and forth to work so I can get my paycheck to buy future groceries. I’m not telling you all of this to make you feel sorry for me, though. The fact is, there are a lot of people in the world who have it worse than I do. Much worse. I have a job. I have health insurance (it’s expensive, but I have it.) I get sick time, so I can take a day off once in a while when my kids are sick. I even get vacation time. And, I work at a university, so I get to take up to seven credits of classes at work each semester for free. I have a lot of opportunities and options that many people do not have. So no, I’m not complaining. But the thing is, I did get to thinking today about all the creative ideas that a lot of us have to come up with to keep roofs over our heads and food in our kids’ bellies. I have found many ideas from others like me on the internet, and I bet I’ve also come up with some interesting ideas that other people can use. So why not share them? Besides, if I put up a website and throw some ads on it, it stops being a hobby and becomes a revenue stream. And, who couldn’t use an extra one of those? I hope you’ll get some use out of my shiny new website. Welcome to The Poor Mum’s Palace! |
