For moms, having an awesome laundry detergent that cleans those grass-stained, dirt-caked clothes is a must. It is important to find a dependable brand that smells great and works hard to clean perfectly, so that you don’t have to. Laundry detergent is another one of those household items that adds up over the course of a year. What if I told you that I have finally found a homemade laundry detergent recipe that leaves our clothes so fresh and so clean AND is one-third the cost of your store-bought brand? I opt for a powder detergent, versus liquid, because it is less time-consuming to make and stores better than the store-bought versions. Here is the recipe I use:
Ingredients
- 4 cups shaved soap (Kirks Castile soap, found in the body soap aisle. Three bars for $4.99 or $1.66 per laundry detergent batch. I shave the soap using a cheese grater)
- 3 cups Borax (20 MULE TEAM Borax, found in the laundry detergent aisle, $3.99 for 76oz. box or $1.26 per laundry detergent batch)
- 3 cups Baking soda (Arm & Hammer, found in the baking aisle, $0.58 for 8oz. box or $1.74 per laundry detergent batch)
- 20 drops lemongrass ($3.85 per 1oz. bottle), 15 drops lavender ($7.70 per 1oz. bottle), and 10 drops rosemary ($5.13 per 1oz. bottle) Essential oils are used for scent, so pick one or none at all depending on your budget and smell preferences.
